Friends and Loyal Patrons:

About 1 year ago I started working on Circolo (the Waldwick project). I converted a bank back into a restaurant. It took me away from the Plum and the Pear, consuming my time as well as a large investment. Many of you know, subsequently, my wife and managing partner at Circolo took ill and has been hospitalized for many months at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Some of you might also know that Alex, my brother and manager at the Plum and the Pear, wants to slow down and retire. Hence, I decided after much consideration and sadness to sell the Plum and the Pear.

In February of this year, I had a serious buyer who requested an additional 5-year extension to my existing lease, making the lease a total of 10 years, which seems only reasonable. On March 1st of 2018, I met with my landlord Senator Henry McNamara and explained my regret but needed to sell under the existing circumstances. In short, Senator McNamara refused to extend the lease and the buyer walked away from the sale. Since March of 2018, two other potential buyers with interest have walked away due to the lease situation. Let me be clear about two important facts. The first fact is that under the terms of my existing lease, Senator McNamara is not “obligated” to extend the lease. However, the second important fact, and perhaps most significant, is that in April of 2014, before executing my existing lease, the Senator verbally agreed and gave me his word that he would not unreasonably withhold an extension of this lease, which would have given me an exit plan today. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, he has not fulfilled his promise and I am not in a position to sustain the business going forward.

”Being a chef and restauranteur is my life’s work and aside from family, my greatest joy.” It has been with great pleasure to have been given the opportunity to serve and get to know each and every one of you over the last 4 years at the Plum and the Pear and before at il Villino. Managing both Circolo and the Plum and the Pear has become impossible and so I am saddened but have no choice but to vacate the Plum and the Pear. I wish you all well and thank you for the good times and fond memories.

Warm regards,

George Kalivas
